The Rev. Dennis Gerard Jarry, 59, rector of Christ Church in Andover, Massachusetts died December 27, 2001 at William W. Backus Hospital in Norwich,CT. Born on May 29, 1942 in Norwich, CT, he was the son of Dorothy E. Jarry of Lisbon, CT and the late Gerard L. Jarry.

The Rev. Jarry graduated from St. Thomas Seminary in Bloomfield, CT in 1962 and from St. Mary’s Seminary and University in Baltimore, MD in 1968. He received a Master’s degree in Sacred Liturgy from Notre Dame University in South Bend, Indiana in 1979. He participated in an Anglican Studies program in Oxford, England in 1985, and in 1995 received certification in spiritual direction at the Franciscan Center in Andover, MA.

Father Jarry was ordained a Roman Catholic priest on May 11, 1968. His first assignment was at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Gales Ferry, CT from 1968 to 1973. He served St. Agnes Church in Niantic, CT from 1973 to 1975 and was then assigned as Chaplain to Xavier High School in Middletown, CT for five years. He served as Director of the Office of Liturgy for the Norwich Diocese. Dennis was pastor of St. Mary’s Church in Clinton, CT from 1981 to 1988.

The Rev. Jarry married Barbara J. Gallagher on March 11, 1989 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Wallingford, CT. During their years in New Jersey, Dennis administered a national grant for the American Liver Foundation and was a director for the New Jersey Self Help Clearing House. Barbara worked as a psychotherapist and spiritual director.

The Jarry’s were members of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, Montclair, NJ. In January, 1992 at St. Luke’s, Dennis was received as priest in the Episcopal Church by Bishop John Shelby Spong. Dennis served as interim rector of St. Peter’s Church, Mt. Arlington, NJ until his call to serve as rector at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Westboro, MA in December, 1992. He served there for eight years.

Father Jarry was nominated for the office of Bishop in CT and at the same time, received a call to serve as rector of Christ Church, Andover, MA in 2000. His many gifts would enrich that parish until his untimely death on the 27th of December, 2001.

Dennis and Barbara were partners in retreat ministry providing days and weekends of prayer throughout their years together. They were partners in every sphere of life. The humor, love of life, and love of others, which he exemplified, was in his own words “profoundly enriched by the love he and Barbara shared.
