Mullen, Anthony James


Anthony James "AJ" MULLEN 77, died May 5, 2005, at his home in Port Ludlow, WA. Born Sept 2, 1927 to Anthony James (Tone) and Marie (Speicher) Mullen in Jermyn, PA, he was the eldest of five children. AJ attended Villanova Univ. from 1944 to 1950, completing his undergraduate engineering studies. During that time he also spent a year in the Army. He entered Augustine Univ. Washington DC, 1951-1954, completing his studies in theology, canon law, and church history. AJ was ordained a Catholic priest on Sept 8, 1953. He also attended Catholic Univ. of America, Washington DC, 1951-1954, and received a master's degree in physics and a minor in math. From 1954 to 1959, AJ taught mechanical drawing and physics at Archbishop Carroll High School in Washington DC. From 1959-1970, he taught electrical engineering and physics at Villanova Univ. AJ attended Bryn Mawr Univ. Bryn Mawr, PA 1962-1968 and obtained a PhD in physics. In 1970 he left the Augustinians and married Kathleen Parr on Aug 13 in San Jose, CA. He worked at the Geophysical Institute of the Univ. of Alaska the first year of their marriage. From 1971-1993, AJ was an Engineering Supervisor in electromagnetic engineering at Boeing. AJ attended Antioch Univ. Seattle from 1993 -1995, and obtained a master's degree in marriage and family counseling. From 1996-2001, AJ was employed at Catholic Community Services, Seattle, as a mental health counselor. AJ then became self-employed as a counselor 2001-2003. In 2003, AJ completed the Guardian ad Litem Training Course with the King County Bar Association. AJ was a member of the American Counseling Association and a member of Sigma Xi. Survived by his wife Kay and his two sons Tony, who presently teaches at Tsuda Univ. in Tokyo; and Tim, of Port Hadlock, WA. Tim and his wife Esther became the proud parents of Collen James Mullen, Born May 4, 2005. AJ received the news that he had become a grandfather one day before his passing. Services at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 10 at the Wayside United Church of Christ, 2000 Dash Point Rd, Federal Way, WA.
