John J. Walsh, 86, of Cranston, died peacefully on May 28 at Steere House Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Providence. John is survived by his beloved wife Jude (Candelmo) Walsh, daughter Renee Marchand, and two sisters: Sr. Ann Marie Walsh FCJ and Sr. Joanna Walsh FCJ. He was predeceased by his sister, Sr. Assumption Walsh FCJ.
John was born in Providence, the son of the late John and Annie (McGowan) Walsh and baptized in Blessed Sacrament Church, Providence. He attended Blessed Sacrament School, LaSalle Academy and Our Lady of Providence Seminary. John spent four years at Le Grand Seminaire de St. Yves in Brittany, France, where he was inspired by the theologian Msgr. Jean Marie Hervé.
Ordained in 1954, John was in the active ministry as a priest for 24 years. His first 11 years were spent at the Cathedral Parish in Providence. While there, he worked with the Catholic Youth Organization, and was chaplain of the Laetare Association for the support of priests. Together with his good friend, Fr. Neil Lynch, he laid the groundwork for future permanent chaplaincy at Rhode Island Hospital. While associate pastor at St. Joseph's Parish, Newport, he was a founding member of the New Visions organization, which sought to address the issue of injustice. John was pastor of Holy Trinity, Central Falls, for four years. He was active in the charismatic movement and prayer groups.
John worked as a real estate agent in South County for 20 years and was active in Christ the King Parish. He and his beloved wife Jude enjoyed involvement in St. Ann's Parish, Cranston, and later in St. Paul's, Cranston. John was a lector, Eucharistic minister, Bible Study leader and also assisted with the RCIA Program.
His funeral will be held on Thursday, June 2, at 9 a.m. from the Barrett and Cotter Funeral Home, 1328 Warwick Avenue, Warwick, RI 02888, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Paul Church, One St. Paul Place, Cranston, RI. Visiting hours will be on Wednesday, June 1, from 4-7 p.m., with a prayer service at 5:30 p.m. Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery in Pawtucket.
In lieu of flowers donations may be given to St. Paul Church, One St. Paul Place, Cranston, RI 02905, or Blessed Sacrament School, 240 Regent Ave., Providence, RI 02908. Performing an act of kindness in John's memory will carry on the good he tried to do in his life.

John was very active in CORPUS New England throughout his life. Besides being a member of the planning committee for CORPUS Boston Conference in 1997, John was an active and enthusiastic participant in our gatherings in Framingham MA at the Deaf Center. He was also instrumental and the driving force in forming the CORPUS Rhode Island group which still meets on a regular monthly basis.
